Application Analysis: Pre-Deployment

Characterizing and profiling applications is an inherent part of good pre-deployment planning. NextGen Networks reviews "Total Response Time" as three individual components:

Server Time
Client Time
Network Transmission Time

Our thread analysis is done showing the time contribution of each individual line of code, the number of Application Turns and TCP turns, Packet Size (maximum, minimum and average), burst time analysis and more. These characteristics provide insight into how application design and network design impact performance. They also allow us to "model an application" over the network - to predict how the application will behave over the network.

Our Real World Example presents the issues of performance - application response time and bandwidth. For the application used in the example, it explains how the incremental benefit of additional bandwidth diminishes once circuit speed reaches 256k. A chart takes you through the bottleneck process, describing how they occur
(client >>server>>latency>>bandwidth).

Application Analysis: Production

Applications “in-production” require a two-sided analysis, using separate traces from the server side and the client side of a network connection. The two-sided trace must be properly merged and filtered in order to isolate “Background Traffic” from the specific “Application Task” under investigation. We provide a breakdown of Client Time, Server Time and Transmission Time, broken out between Latency & Congestion effects. As with Pre-Deployment Analysis we provide extensive information, including the impacts of each line of code on overall Application Response Time.
